About Upwardly Nubile

Emily Bronte Upwardly Nubile is a webcomic brought to you by Chris Grist and Nick Bligh of Spadgos. At the current time the comic is updating once a week, usually around the weekend (Brisbane time). The concept is that Jane Austen, Emily Bronte and Anne Bronte form a rock and roll band.

Other important players in the comic are a very friendly guy called Squidhead, and some other guy. Heaps of other characters and anachronistic references will appear in the comic in the future, so stay tuned.

Jane Austen Fronting the band is the ever insatiably perpendicular Jane. An indisputable red-head, Jane has been coming to terms with the stagnation of her literary career, and the logical next step of course was to start a band. Some may

say it is a mid-life or post-life crisis but I think she's a bit of allright. Jane's best friend Emily plays the bass, and Emily's blonde sister Anne was recruited for the drums. Emily's life growing up on the moors seems to have left her with a grumpy disposition and she tends to suffer from some level of social awkwardness and isolation. By contrast, and perhaps due to the fact that she moved to the city at a younger age, Anne is overly friendly and can strike up a friendship or one night stand with anyone within minutes. Anne has been known to multiple men.

SquidheadIt's probably also important to mention Emily and Anne's older sister Charlotte, who also lives nearby and visits her darling sisters from time to time. Emily thinks of Charlotte as something of a self-important princess. A lot of people think it's just because Emily is jealous of Charlotte's previous writing prowess, although a lot of those people like Charlotte so they might be biased. Most people like Charlotte more, mostly because she expects it although she is friendly enough.

Another important character in the comic is some guy called Theo, who works at some kindof cafe place where he introduced himself to Jane after recognising her from her writing fame. He's pretty smitten, but who wouldn't be.

Theo's best friend Squidhead, is also worth a mention, as he is a very singular character. He's the nicest person you'd ever know, i mean that.

More information about all the characters, as they appear and develop in the comic is available on the characters page.
